Registration Requirements

In order to be qualified to vote, you must

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Virginia
  • Be at least 18 years of age by the next general election
  • Not be convicted felon or have had your voting rights restored
  • Not have been declared mentally incapacitated or have had your disabilities removed

Registration closes 22 days prior to any general or primary election.  You can register in person at the General Registrar's Office, public assistance agencies, such as the Department of Social Services, Department of Health, Department of Motor Vehicles, military recruitment offices, or through the mail.  A Virginia Voter Registration Application can be downloaded from the Virginia State Board of Elections website (http://elections.virginia.gov/registration/voter-forms/index.html).  You may then print the application, complete all required information, sign and mail to this office.  Completed applications are not accepted by fax.  The application requires basic information - full legal name, date of birth, social security number, residence address, mailing address (if different from residence address), affirmation of US citizenship and Virginia residency, affirmation of not being a convicted felon (or proof of voting rights restoration), and affirmation of mental competency (or proof of restoration of mental capacities), as well as, previous voter registration information.  Mailed registration applications must be postmarked by the final day of registration prior to any election.  A Virginia Voter Registration Notice will be issued once your registration information is processed.

Any change of name or address should be promptly reported, either in person or by mail.  This information must include you legal signature in order to be valid.  Once the change is processed, a new Virginia Voter Registration Notice will be sent to you by mail.  A duplicate Virginia Voter Registration Notice can be requested if the original is lost or destroyed.
